Don’t lose your authentic voice because of AI

Today, this column is not written or edited with AI. It is written by Essi Maria Koski-Lammi only.
I did not even check the grammar.
This is why…
I have always loved writing. The entire process of it. When I write, the text flows through me, from my heart and soul.
Time flies and I love every second of it.
I write poems, short stories, I actually also have written a few novels (which I never dared to publish), I have been blogging since I was a teen. And the list keeps on going.
Writing has always been THE easiest and best way to express my true voice.
Although this is now changing. As I am also daring to express myself more via speaking. You know, drawing boundaries, saying no, talking about my needs, showing myself and so on.
Nowadays I write a lot with AI.
I guess you agree that it is a great editor, amazing help what comes to grammar, gives you new perspectives, inspires your, helps you to be more creative, helps you when you get stuck, searches information fast and teaches you to write better…
AI is great, when you wanna have a quick blog post on your website, or create a quick post on instagram, especially when you don’t have time to write it yourself, or don’t know what to even say. You just ask it and boom, the text is there. A few edits and it is ready to be published.
And the best thing? Writing with it is SO fast.
Writing has never been this easy before.
We definitely should keep on using it.
But…
Here comes the famous but..
AI is starting to replace our authentic voices
Those voices that come from our hearts and souls, whether it is more creative writing or more analytical writing.
And yes, I am training AI to sound like me. It certainly has become already better writing my style – but it also still has a long way to go.
But the truth is:
The more I write with it, the more I see AI shining through in YOUR Instagram or Linkedin posts.
Or newsletters where I have signed up to hear YOUR authentic voice.
To be honest, that has been starting to annoy me. A LOT.
Because, now that we all use it, it feels like so many people “have the same voice”.
The AI voice.
Where is your voice? Your unique expression? That beautiful expression that I so much would like to hear.
Is it really coming through in the text you write?
Where is my voice?
Is AI going to replace our voices even more in the future?
Especially when we are training it to sound more like us?
The more I write with AI, the lazier writer I am. I am noticing that I don’t write anymore that much myself.
I don’t write that much anymore from my heart and soul.
I want to change this.
The other day I was about to post something on Instagram stories and just told AI to write a small text for me. When I watched myself doing it I wasn’t feeling okay. I started to question my behavior:
Is this my current reality now? That I cannot even write a few sentence to my IG story?
No, thanks. I wanna keep on using my “writing brain”, I want the text to flow from my heart. I wanna challenge myself to say what I truly wanna say, even during moments when I don’t know what to say.
Not everything needs to be written with AI.
Not everything should even be written with AI.
I also have noticed that when I write with AI, sometimes, I’m not so connected to the text. As it is not created by me. My soul is missing from the text even if the text sounds great.
When I edit the text, it starts to sound more like my authentic expression. At least a little bit.
But I can still hear the difference. And you can too.
It is a dance between two worlds. The AI voice and my voice. And what’s now clear to me is that I want my voice to be stronger.
Because I have been hiding my own voice for years. I have been scared to speak up in many situations.
Sometimes in work meetings, I have just wanted to disappear as I have not felt safe to express my opinions.
So, even if I keep training the AI, and will still use it a lot, I do wanna keep my authentic voice.
AI should never replace that. It even cannot, even if it is trained to sound like me.
Why?
Because it doesn’t have my heart and soul.
AI, personal branding and branding
Today I had a chat with my friend Katja Presnal. She is the founder of Crush Movement and a true pioneer in marketing (trust me, I have worked with lots of marketing people!) And we started talking about this topic.
What she said to me, resonated deeply within me.
“If you want to be a thought leader, it will not happen by writing amazing text with AI. You need to express your unique voice. In the future, people can spot more and more the text written by AI – and people don’t wanna follow those people anymore.”
Perhaps pause here and think about those words.
For a long time I have said that the day comes when there will be made by humans – labelin product packaging and service descriptions. Just like we have now: organic label, vegan label etc.
Always when I mention this, people are laughing, because it sounds funny.
But again, pause for a sec. Think about it.
We want real voices. We want to hear YOUR voice.
We want to hear that honest, raw expression of yourself that only you can do.
In the era of AI, don’t lose your own voice.
It is needed. You are needed.
More than ever.
Heal with me for a sec.
Did you know that self-expression is located in your throat area (throat chakra)?
When you are struggling to express yourself, there’s energy stuck in that area. It can be caused by many different factors and can be released.
The rise of AI is starting to push us collectively heal our throat chakras and our self-expression.
Day by day we all are getting more empowered to stand in our power.
Day by day, we wanna use our voices.
Writing with AI is definitely not wrong and you should keep doing it. But…
– Are people hearing your real voice, when you write with AI?
– Are you leading your self-expression or is AI?
– How could you bring your own authentic voice more to the front and allow AI either support or boost it?
By the way, I would love to copy paste this now to Chat GPT and get a more polished version of it. At least, I would like AI to check out the spelling mistakes.
But, today I am not.
Because, those things that make us really interesting are the raw, authentic, unpolished parts that make us human.
